The Finnish have it down

A while ago I had the pleasure of knowing a finn. He was 16, obsessed with coffee and used to skip school with me. Finland is very similar to NZ in many respects except clothes, we need to extend our fashion reportoires to emulate those of our finnish friends!

Now I have the pleasure of Hel-looks I am a massive fan of street style sites and this(shot on the streets of the finnish capital Helinski)is one of my favourites. Although the Finnish are a little more out there than the average New Zealander there is so much inspiration to be taken from this wonderful site!!

Unfortunatly (with Finland being on the opposite end of the world to New Zealand) the seasons are all wrong! so i have delved into the archives of hel-looks and found a couple of summery and easily re-created looks for you!!

ok so this look is very sweet and versatile (ditch the tights on a hot day). All it takes is a little bright dress, sew it up super short so it has that child-like quality. The buttons done all the way up add a sort of tom-boyish imtoocooltoshowyoumyboobs edge (see chloe sevigny for further inspiration on this)This doesnt work quite so well if you have a short neck or big boobs so maybe jst do up one more button thsn you normally would. An integral part of this outfit is the blazer, let it be said right now I <3 blazers!! honestly they are such a wardrobe staple and every girl (and guy!!) should own at least two (one plain, one patterned), i have 5!!. team up a dress, the perfect fitting blazer, plain boots, opaques and a backpack for this delicious nerdy look.

ok so this is just sweet. This look is so perfect for summer days at the beach with friends, sunday lunches with the family, church, basically anything!! This style of dress is flattering on everybody and not too hard to find. Hit up your local op-shops in search of the perfect tea-dress, dont worry about the length! you can always take it up (or get it taken up by a tailor but this can be expensive so learn to sew goddamn it!!). I have a dress identical in cut to this but red with green and cream highlights. Keep everything else simple, pair it with some plain sandels (not jandels!! gladiators are fine) and a simple bag and you'll be looking the doll in no time at all.

This one is a little more tricky, it all hinges on the pattern mixing. When mixing be careful not to over-do it; extreme pattern mixing should be left to professionals like tavi. So basically choose two patterns which are neither too similar or too contrasting to each over (either in colour or in actual pattern). Cute high-waised skirts like this are easy to make, in fact i will do step by step instructions at some stage). Once again a blazer is instrumental in creating the preppy but tom-boyish vibe of this outfit. Hit up op-shops for this, I recently scored a stunning velvet, floral blazer by Kenzo from recycle boutique for $30. So shop around, make an effort. A cool and loose tee shirt is essential, either in black or white. If you have a short neck alter the neckline to make it deeper. Teamed with f***-off sunglasses, sneakers and a tote-bag this look is school worthy and transmits a sort of mis-matched but oh-so-stylish vibe. If you like this look you'll probably like the clothes worn by Naomi on season three of skins.

The best thing of street style sites is the wearability of things, not everything is shown on a size 0 model photoshopped within an inch of her life, not everything costs around a thousand dollars. The street is the heart of fashion. Designers think they decide on trends, rather the street tells the designer where things are going. An example of sheer people power.
